Free Motion Quilting – Garland from I Patch and Quilt

Add a field of flowers to your quilt!

Joyful, elegant and full of details, these off set flowers are connected by a loopy line making them more whimsical.

The freemotion design Garland is based on a square grid, with the flowers placed offset from the previous rows. The flowers are connected by a ‘horizontal’ continuous line, making them look like an actual garland. This FMQ pattern would work great on quilts with themes like nature, flowers, plants, weddings, elegance.

The black sample below is from 2017 when I stitched out the design in a 1 inch grid.

The design is ...

Baker’s Dozen 49, 50 from Virtual Quilter

In this project file, the blocks are from the Electric Quilt library, but I have mixed up pieces from some of the blocks, and altered the layouts of most of the blocks in some way, and have continued to use the blocks in their original form.

The other difference between this and the EQ Dozen projects is that this one started with a baker’s dozen … 13 blocks as opposed to 12 blocks!

Sewing for Wishes: Join the Stardust Charity Quilt Along

There’s something extraordinary about the quilting community. When we come together, we don’t just create beautiful quilts — we also create hope. I’m so excited to be participating in the Fat Quarter Shop’s 2025 Charity Quilt Along, featuring the dazzling Stardust Quilt and benefitting Make-A-Wish Central & South Central Texas.

This year’s quilt is called Stardust, and it’s every bit as magical as the name suggests. With radiant patchwork and starry motifs, it’s a quilt that shines — both visually and ...

Free Motion Quilting – Trail from I Patch and Quilt

One of the joys of Springtime is going for a sunny walk in nature, discovering new paths, different vistas and beautiful plants. The design Trail resembles such a walk, the lines look like a wandering path through a landscape, moving away from and moving back towards your path.

The allover design Trail is mix between a curl and Stipple. I have written about stippling before and expressed my amazement that a lot of quilters learned the Stipple pattern as one of their first freemotion designs. I understand the appeal of a good stipple, but this freemotion design really isn’t ...

    Grogu from Jean Swenson

    Grogu
    October 2024

With much going on at the end of last year, this one sort of slipped by getting posted!

This started as a summer project with my grandson Nolan back in 2023. At the time, he was a huge fan of all things Grogu and wanted to make a pixel quilt similar to Pocket Full of Monsters. We didn’t get it finished by the time he was set to start back to school in the Fall, so it was put away for our next summer’s project. By the summer of 2024, his interest in working on ...

Free Motion Quilting – Drift from I Patch and Quilt

Floating in a stream, moving with the current, just relaxing! That just sounds wonderful.

The edge to edge design Drift is an allover freemotion design that is based on a continuous line with curvy bends. The design looks like kelp drifting in a stream, don’t you think? This FMQ pattern would work great on quilts with themes like nature, water, ocean, sea, river, fishing and meditation.

    Pattern Tutorial

The designs based on feather shapes on the inside of a deep curve. The combination of the two feathers looks a bit look an oven mitt too. Depending on the way ...

Threads from the Heartland: Quilted from Becca's Crazy Projects

I finally got this quilt kit quilt onto the long arm and quilted.
I went with a Baptist fan design because it seemed like it would fit the style of the prints. The design is Kristin's Easy Baptist Fan from Urban Elementz. Their library of quilting designs is great when you have an idea of what you want.
I need to find some binding and finish this one.

Large Prints from Becca's Crazy Projects

Sometimes I have a really large print that can become a little quilt without much piecing. Cutting these fabrics into squares will give you squares that don't look much like the overall fabric. For those large prints, it is a good idea to use them like you would a panel. I had less than a yard of this print and it was a good candidate for this kind of quilt. I started by cutting my center to 30.5" by as long as the fabric I had available. In this case, I my center was cut to 30.5 ...

Second Chance Quilt: Little Bits from Wedding Dress Blue

In a hand-me-down bag there were these little bits. A 1-1/2″ strip with 6 1-1/2″ squares attached. Twenty of them. Such cute little bits. They wanted to be a quilt.

Adding 6″ stars in matching colors and some sashing fit the bill. I like the way it makes the stars shimmer with movement.

The polka dot binding was an unexpected decision, and the backing is a little odd, too. But they do work, and it all came from stash, so that’s a win.

Second Chance projects can make one dig deep to find a solution. I do ...

Free Motion Quilting – Drip Drop from I Patch and Quilt

Marking a grid on your fabric gives you so many options for cool freemotion designs. A grid gives you just the right amount of guidance while keeping the hand-guided look.

In many of my designs I use a 1 inch grid, just because my samples aren’t normally big. In a lot of cases you can enlarge the grid to whatever size that works for you. There are only two limitations I can think off. Firstly, some sewing machines will block your view of the fabric behind the needle. You can only enlarge the design as far as you can ...

Coon Dash Quilt COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

In a scrap bag I got small scraps of this raccoon/bear/tree fabric. Sort of odd colors, but the print was cute.

The solution was Churn Dash blocks with the fabric in the centers. And some sashing and matching binding.

It will be delivered to a co-worker who is expecting her first baby soon. The baby shower was a few weeks ago…but we are all doing the best we can.

Churn Dash blocks are so versatile.

Free Motion Quilting – Irons from I Patch and Quilt

Edge to edge quilting designs are a great way to a finish a quilt, but they can be a bit confusing. Some freemotion quilters fear getting stuck in a corner and having to break thread.

Well first of all, breaking thread is not the end of the world! Just do it, and continue somewhere else!

Secondly, knowing the structure of the design and its ‘escape possibilities’ are really helpful to prevent ending up with those awkward spots where you have gotten yourself stuck.

And let’s not forget, you are ALLOWED to cross of your already stitched line. There is ...
